Animation has more than one submission route. An existing updream film may fit a platform track; a 3–15-minute work may fit a dedicated animation category. A general film festival adds premiere and fee considerations. Start with your film, then compare the routes below.
Public rules reviewed ·
Four selected calls, not a complete animation-festival list. Evidence and open questions are marked per entry. HiShorts specifications use official poster copies reviewed on 25 October; the announcement text was reread this round. Deadline labels follow recorded dates, not new extensions.
A platform animation track
Animation track; updream must be the main AI tool
HiShorts! × updream · AiShorts! 2026
Recorded deadline shown above
Choose the right track
The verified organiser announcement lists Fiction, Animation, Experimental and Music Video. Enter the actual animation track; a soundtrack alone does not make the film a music video. The announced plan is to screen 20 nominated works, not every submission.1
Runtime and eligibility
The archived official specifications require 2–30 minutes including all titles/credits, created after 20 March 2026. Full age, territory, team-size and premiere conditions remain unconfirmed. Clarify boundary dates or an existing release through the official activity route first.2
AI tools and thresholds
The announcement requires updream as the main AI creation tool. A token final use does not demonstrate that requirement. No complete minimum-percentage or other-tool policy was verified. Retain truthful tool/generation and human-work records rather than inventing a percentage.1
Materials and submission route
Archived specifications list landscape MOV/MP4, 1080p HD and H.264. Submit in Bilibili’s film/TV section, add the updream and HiShorts tags, append the competition/Animation-track title suffix and pin the stated updream-production notice. Live activity association was not tested; check the current official flow before publishing.2
Fees, publication and permissions
The entry fee remains unconfirmed; do not label it free. Advertised updream credits are not cash. A separate extra-credit offer adds an invitation code, an intro within three seconds and an updream link-review step; these are not established universal entry requirements. Check public posting against other premiere commitments; full licence terms remain unverified.12
Our take
Most relevant if updream already drives your workflow and you are willing to submit through Bilibili. Choose Animation, then verify the current activity page, fee and publication terms. Do not spend a film’s premiere eligibility merely to chase credits. Detailed specifications here rely on archived posters, not a newly verified full rulebook.12
Separate Animation Film and Preschool Animation categories
CSFCCA AI Film Festival · Winter 2026
Recorded deadline shown above
Choose the right track
Best AI Animation Film focuses on animation craft, character performance and visual style. Best AI Preschool Animation is for preschool stories, educational work, nursery rhymes and character shorts, with age-appropriate storytelling. Cute characters alone do not establish a preschool audience. Multiple categories require separate entries.1
Runtime and eligibility
Both expanded animation categories specify 3–15 minutes. Winter work must be completed on/after 1 Jan 2026; individuals, teams, companies and authorised representatives worldwide may enter. Prior screenings/releases are allowed unless a category says otherwise. Clarify credit timing and the exact version. The Winter event is 26 Feb 2027, not the Fall event on 20 Nov.1
AI tools and thresholds
AI must meaningfully contribute to at least 50% of the overall creative/production process or final visual content, as applicable to the category. Incidental or decorative use is insufficient. This differs from a required-main-brand rule; a long tool list does not prove the threshold.1
Materials and submission route
Use the designated FilmFreeway route with an accessible online screener at least 1920×1080. Non-English dialogue, narration or essential on-screen text needs complete accurate English subtitles. Films without those elements need none; English-language subtitles are encouraged. Keep links, passwords, files and subtitles available throughout review.1
Fees, publication and permissions
Both animation categories list $22 Regular/$25 Final standard fees; Gold prices are $19.80/$22.50 for eligible members. The dollar currency and checkout extras remain unconfirmed. Each category costs separately; submitted entries are non-refundable. A USD 299 award statuette is optional, not an entry expense or cash prize. Entry grants worldwide non-exclusive full-film festival screening and excerpt promotion; clarify licence duration/withdrawal.1
Our take
For an existing 3–15-minute animation, start with the intended audience and choose the closest category. Budget per category rather than assuming one payment covers every award. Document meaningful AI contribution and distinguish the Winter call from still-visible Fall judging information.1
A general festival accepting AI animation, not an AI-only award
MIFF 2027 · Melbourne International Film Festival
Recorded deadline shown above
Choose the right track
The FAQ accepts animation, documentary, experimental and narrative work across shorts, features and XR. Classify the film by its actual form; there is no separate AI Animation entry award established here. Assess a completed animation as a short or feature, rather than treating a script, concept images or trailer as a finished submission.21
Runtime and eligibility
Shorts are up to 40 minutes; features exceed 40, including credits. Regulations require completion after 1 Jan 2026, while the FAQ allows certain 2025-completed films first publicly screened after that date. Resolve this conflict in writing for an older film. A previous MIFF submission cannot be re-entered, even as a significantly revised film or WIP.12
AI tools and thresholds
Generative AI and AI in key writing, production or post-production processes are accepted with clear disclosure of how they affect image, sound and creative work. No universal minimum AI percentage is published; do not change the film to reach an invented 50%. Extra information may be requested; real-person simulation without appropriate explicit consent can be ineligible.12
Materials and submission route
Upload to FilmFreeway or add a password-protected Vimeo/private/unlisted link to the project; an emailed screener alone is not accepted. Non-English films need English subtitles. Keep access valid and enable Vimeo embedding for the organiser’s review. The submitted version is the only one considered before selection, not each later update.1
Fees, publication and permissions
International-short standard fees are USD 50/65/75/85/95 across rounds ending 31 Oct, 30 Nov, 31 Dec, 31 Jan and 16 Feb. Australian/co-production categories have separate eligibility/pricing; nationality alone does not choose the rate. Preserve at least a Victorian premiere until 23 Aug 2027. Clarify online access from Australia, home-entertainment releases and conflicting premieres; limited-run online festivals must geoblock Australia. Clear all materials; this collection does not fully review later exhibition contracts.12
Our take
Relevant if you want to assess a general festival, can preserve premiere eligibility and have a defined budget. Check release history, completion year and previous MIFF entries before choosing the fee round. AI acceptance resolves only one condition; it does not establish premiere eligibility, selection or eligibility for every shorts award.12
Animation call: 2–30 minutes in general rules, 3–20 in the category
AI Film 3 · AI in Anime 2026
Recorded deadline shown above
Choose the right track
This call has one published Anime category covering short, long, experimental and music-video descriptions. The six categories for the future 2027 conference are not this November event’s entry categories. The published judging notes emphasise anime feel, emotion and creative exploration rather than a tool demonstration alone.1
Runtime and eligibility
Expanding the actual category confirms an unresolved conflict: general rules say 2–30 minutes, the category says 3–20. A film below three or above 20 minutes should not pay based only on the wider range. Other films should also clarify credit timing. Full age, territory, completion-year and prior-release/award conditions remain insufficiently specified.1
AI tools and thresholds
AI must shape output design, with identifiable process and tools in the submission. No universal percentage or mandatory brand is stated. Cross-tool examples in judging notes do not make Midjourney, Runway or Suno compulsory, nor establish rights clearance for every asset made with them.1
Materials and submission route
Use the designated FilmFreeway route with the film, brief description and poster. General rules accept HD-or-better DCP/MP4/AVI/MOV; an initial paid DCP is not compulsory. Any language is allowed with English subtitles as appropriate; clarify dialogue/text and subtitle delivery. Clear music, visuals and other materials.1
Fees, publication and permissions
The expanded category lists $30 standard, $20 student and $24 Gold. Explicit dollar currency, discount eligibility and checkout extras remain unconfirmed; entry fees are non-refundable. Submission grants non-exclusive worldwide exhibition/reproduction/distribution and promotional uses, plus credited poster-book use. Licence duration/withdrawal remain unconfirmed despite retained ownership.1
Our take
A candidate for a film with a clear animation style, after clarifying runtime, release history and permissions. Without an answer, do not combine the most favourable sentence from each conflicting rule into an eligibility claim. A nearby 10 November deadline does not remove the need to check.1
